I’m sitting in Heathrow Airport now, after a 13 hours flight from Singapore. I’m waiting to take another 8-hour flight to spend the rest of the year halfway across the world.
I’ll be on a leadership fellowship program with the US Department of State. This fellowship brings together 100 of the best community leaders from around the world for an intensive leadership development program. I applied back in October last year, went through a couple rounds of interviews and was selected from among more than 5,300 applicants from 84 countries. I’m the sole Singaporean representative this year, as well as the first female Singaporean on this programme ever. #represent
Our journeys will begin in Washington, where we will be meeting state officials and undergo training, before flying off to the different states for practicum. I’ll personally be working with an American NGO based in San Francisco, engaging with gender and diversity issues – something I’m deeply passionate about and have been advocating for the past few years. When I return, I will be running my own project in the same space, inshaAllah.
San Fran is known for its social justice activism and all-around diversity and awesomeness, so I’m really looking forward to connecting with people and learning exponentially through this opportunity. If you know anyone in SF who you think is awesome, link me up with them please! I’m very excited to share my journey with you too, so you know I’ll be sharing more on my social media platforms. ❤️
