I remember sitting in front of my hostel along Khao San Road in Bangkok past midnight and holding back tears, as I look at a little girl of about 4, pass out roses to drunk foreigners who treated her like a doll. She allowed them to pick her up, ruffle her hair, kiss her shoulders, do whatever, and when they placed her down, she’d held out her hands for money. Sometimes they’d give her loose change, most times they just shooed her away. I wanted to call out to her to sit with me, to go home, to get some sleep, for doesn’t she have school the next day? I remember going back to my young cousin who was the same age as the young girl when I got back, and giving her a long hug. It doesn’t make sense.
Did you know that the Global Slavery Index released in June 2016 estimates 45.8 million people enslaved in the world today? About 2 million children are exploited every year in the global commercial sex trade. Women and girls make up 98% of victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation.
It includes pornography, prostitution and sex trafficking of women and children. Each year, an estimated 800,000 women and children are trafficked across international borders.
Generation 414’s was set up to serve a notoriously difficult-to-reach demographic of commercially sexually exploited women by providing skills training and educational support while delivering long-term sustainable income through the business.
Please help Reach, Rescue, Restore trafficked women who seek an alternative to the sex industry in Thailand. Each donation helps to secure holistic employment and freedom to those who have been exploited and provides personal development opportunities to them.
I remember telling Christine Teo, the beautiful soul running this, that she was an answer to my prayers. She still is, I know our crossed paths is just the beginning of a lifetime of adventures. Hey, I might even join her in Melbourne one day!
Please join me in making a difference by supporting this fundraiser for Generation 414, NightLight International, The A21 Campaign at#ImpactGuru. So far, it has raised 45% of its goal of US$ 3,000!
