There is a very special place in my heart for the Rainbows for Batam project and the Rainbow Bake Sale. What started out as a serendipitous encounter at a time of brokenness has evolved into something beautiful that goes beyond me as an individual, and has embraced, and hopefully, touched many lives.
I’ve yet to write on the last two trips to the children homes in Batam (I know, my bad) but here’s a little photo preview of what we were up to:
For those of you who may not know what Rainbows For Batam is about, it is a self-initiated and self-organised project that involves gathering beautiful souls who want to learn as much as they want to give. It is an outlet for discovery of both self and others, and it embodies my personal philosophy of “We rise by lifting others.”
It first started out in 2013 when I’d gathered a small group of friends for an Eid trip to several orphanages in Batam, and well, as they say, the rest is history. I’ve written a couple of entries on this project and they can be found under the TudungVolunteers and TudungProjects tabs above. 🙂
Amongst some of our activities at the orphanages include engaging the children in art and craft, colouring, henna painting, ball games and cleaning the place.
Which finally brings me to the upcoming Rainbow Bake Sale which will be happening this Sunday!
All proceeds from this bake sale will be handed over to two causes: the children homes in Batam and orphan Syrian refugees.
One of the things that I am personally looking into accomplishing with the money raised is to work with Panti Asuhan Riyadhus Shalihin in putting together their madrasah.
One our last trip, we found that their classrooms are in a state of disrepair, and they are currently having their classes in a cramped musollah nearby.
Together with some loved ones, I will be heading to the orphanage to oversee the handling of the donations as well as the repairs in the classroom. I am also hoping to bring another group of beautiful souls to help in the process of preparing the classrooms in the near future, inshaAllah.
In the last bake sale (to read on that, click here), we managed to raise $2700 and made so many happy memories!
